The Express Tribune is reporting that the website of the Karachi Press Club* was attacked yesterday by “hackers who claimed in their messages that they were Indian.” Soon afterwards a Pakistani hacker group hit back against The Press Club of India website*.
The Pakistani hacker group’s message pointed out that it didn’t do any serious harm to the website but was merely sending a warning to Indian hackers. In just the past few minutes, the site for the Press Club of India appears to be recovering.
Similarly we have seen press clubs targeted in China before, but for ostensibly different reasons. It’s hard to say what the motivations behind these recent hacks in India and Pakistan are, but neither appears to be directed at individual journalists as was the case in China.
Internet security has been prominent in the news lately. After Sony’s disastrous security breach last month, we’ve also witnessed Honda (Canada) fall victim to hackers as well. Even more scary was the recent attack on US defense contractor Lockheed Martin, whose networks contain information about weapons systems and military technology.
