It’s hard to believe that India only had 25,000 Internet users back in 1998. Comparing to the current 100 million Internet users, the growth India has achieved in 12 years is simply remarkable. Back then, Internet was a luxury but now it has become a need.
With an Internet penetration rate of just 8%, India ranks third as a nation with the most number of Internet users in the world. The smartphone mobile segment in India is also growing with currently more than 40 million handsets being used to access the Internet.
India’s favorite Internet browser is Microsoft’s Internet Explorer with a 47.11% share. The top search engine site in India is undoubtedly Google with a whopping 96.87% market share. Note that the infographic stated 13 million Facebook users as it reflects data from August 2010. The number of Facebook users in India is now at the 22 million mark.
The number of Internet users has been growing at a 100% increase year on year. Email (94%) remains to be the primary Internet activity in India and music download comes second at 72%. Despite high Internet user growth rate, India is still way behind in terms of Internet speed.
A better infrastructure to drive Internet speed and connectivity would help connect more Indians on the web. The government is already working on it. With a larger online audience, faster connection and high growth rate in Internet adoption, India’s Internet space seems really promising.
