HungryGoWhere’s demise; Nas Daily’s hidden side

Dear readers,

You can tell that someone in Singapore is in their 30s if they recall using HungryGoWhere to search for restaurants.

I certainly belong in that category. The website, however, has fallen out of favor in the smartphone era as Google Maps and social media have taken over as the go-to options.

Last week, we analyzed what led to HungryGoWhere’s demise and the extent to which Singtel was to blame.

Announcement of HungryGoWhere closure’s on its home page.

Its failure wasn’t for the lack of trying. But pressure from the telco to meet the bottom line meant that HungryGoWhere couldn’t pursue an aggressive growth strategy.

Unlike the Web 1.0 media properties of yesteryear, many of today’s media darlings exist solely on social media.

Nas Daily is one of them. Like it or not, you’ve probably seen one of its unapologetically positive videos on Facebook.

But there’s a hidden side to that company and its CEO Nuseir Yassin, in particular. There’s a deliberate strategy behind its simple videos, which is drawing eyeballs.

Yassin, who used to be an engineer, has grander ambitions. He hopes to leverage Nas Daily’s traffic to build an edtech giant – a MasterClass of Asia, if you will.
