Indonesian legaltech startup Hukumonline raises series A funding
Hukumonline, a digital legal services provider in Indonesia, has raised an undisclosed amount of follow-on series A funding from media-focused private equity fund Emerging Media Opportunity Fund (EMOF). The entity had previously invested in Hukumonline in 2017.
The company said it will use the new capital to develop more products and improve existing ones and grow its subscriber base.

Founded in 1999 by a group of legal practitioners and young law reform activists, the legaltech company provides free access to legal information to the general public and paid premium content to enterprises.
Hukumonline’s products and services include a news website, a comprehensive integrated electronic legal database, and the organization of seminars and other events that facilitate discussions on new laws and regulations.
According to a report, there are 88 registered legaltech companies in Southeast Asia. The market is dominated by Singapore and Indonesia with 25 and 21 startups, respectively.
The region, which houses 645 million people and 650 million small and medium-sized enterprises, has only 248,000 lawyers, the report said.
“The Hukumonline team continues to develop innovative digital media products and services that are highly valued by the country’s legal and business communities, as well as the general public,” said Mohamed Nanabhay, deputy CEO at Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF). “This investment will enable the company to improve its offering still further, through both new product extensions and product improvements.”
EMOF is managed by MDIF, a not-for-profit investment fund that provides debt and equity financing to independent media companies. The fund claims to have provided US$227 million in affordable financing to 117 media companies in 41 countries.
