Tencent Tech News is reporting that internal leaks have divulged Chinese telecom and networking giant Huawei‘s plans to invest significantly — more than 100,000,000 RMB, apparently — in Kunlun, a Beijing-based game developer. In addition to several gaming platforms, Kunlun also owns software portal brothersoft.com and mobile portal 1mobile.com.
The partnership apparently has Huawei and Kunlun looking beyond the Chinese market, too. Sources divulged that the two companies are planning a strategy for entering markets overseas. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise; Kunlun has obviously been eyeing the overseas market for some time, and in fact have made several forays into the it already with its English subsidiary, Koram Games.
Kunlun currently offers a variety of games, most of which are either RPGs or RTSs — these are the most popular game genres in China. Most of them are also browser-based and free to play. But Kunlun has been expanding aggressively for the past few years, and recently hired Chen Haoxian, the former vice-chairman of Chinese games giant Shanda, as their vice-chairman of research and development.
Kunlun sources suggested that the company plans to IPO sometime next year, and that the current round of financing is an important step in their strategic plan.
