Beyond Lazada and Shopee: Southeast Asia’s major ecommerce players in each market

In Southeast Asia’s ecommerce scene, the dominance of Shopee and Lazada hasn’t deterred competition. Local sites keep sprouting up, luring consumers away from two of the region’s biggest platforms.

The iPrice Group and App Annie Intelligence have released their second-quarter rankings for ecommerce apps with the most monthly active users (MAUs) and downloads in the region. The Q2 2019 data offers a glimpse into who’s doing well and shows that the underdogs are fighting back – and even leading in at least one country.

In short, Lazada and Shopee may be winning in most places, but they better watch their backs. Market research firm Forrester estimates that ecommerce in Southeast Asia will hit US$53 billion by 2023, and this may leave room for more players to thrive.

Of course, MAUs aren’t the best indicator of an ecommerce platform’s actual health. On the other hand, no marketplace can do well without a large user base.

Here’s a list of popular local platforms that are standing up to the regional giants.

(Note: App MAU, monthly visits, and download rankings pertain to their respective countries.)

Indonesia

Out of all the ecommerce markets in this list, Indonesia
is the biggest. The country makes up 40% of online retail in Southeast Asia and is expected to be worth US$19 million by 2023, according to the Forrester report.

The archipelago is also the most receptive to homegrown players. Local marketplace Tokopedia is ahead in terms of mobile MAUs, pushing down Shopee and Lazada to second and fourth place, respectively.

Blibli

App MAU: #6
App downloads: #7

Blibli did well for itself in Q2, following heavy hitters Shopee, Lazada, Tokopedia, and Bukalapak. The eight-year old marketplace saw an 18% increase in visits during the survey period.
