Square Enix’s Guardian Cross — a mobile card battle game — may not be a critical darling, but it has performed well in Japan since its launch in the summer of 2012, climbing as high as the number three spot in that country’s app store. Hoping to replicate that success in China, Shanda Games is localizing the game for the Chinese market, and today announced that barring any unforeseen surprises, it will be released sometime this year.
According to Shanda, basic localization on the game (which is being titled 魔物狩猎者 in Chinese) including the translation of all content into Chinese is already nearing completion. At the same time, the company is prepping its networks and distribution channels for the game’s launch.

Guardian Cross is a multiplayer card battle game that tasks players with capturing creatures (via a first-person minigame) and then assembling the cards of those creatures into decks for use in turn-based multiplayer card battles. In Japan, it features a freemium monetization system including countdown timers you’ve got to pay to skip past, and the Chinese version is likely to take a very similar approach. Will Chinese gamers embrace Guardian Cross the same way that Japan has? We’ll know the answer to that within the next few months.
Meanwhile, if you want to give the game a shot in English you can try it out on iOS and Android.
