GREE to Establish New Global Gaming Platform, Also Sets Eyes on Start-ups

GREE Tokyo Game Show

It was a busy day for Japan-based mobile social gaming company GREE (TYO:3632). First we got word that it is aiming to have a new platform by the middle of next year. According to Naoki Aoyagi, the CEO of GREE International:

This new platform allows our partners to focus on increasing engagement and revenue, while continuing to offer the most comprehensive free-to-play gaming experience. The new platform will leverage OpenFeint and GREE assets and will bring together Western and Asian mobile social markets with a goal of reaching over one billion users.

We reached out to GREE this morning to learn more, but we have yet to hear back. Update: A representative tells us that more details will be disclosed about the business strategy for this new platform in December.

Then the company also announced this afternoon that it will establish a subsidiary called GREE Ventures, and form a GV-I investment partnership which falls under the management of the former. GV-I is to target unlisted start-up companies in the SouthEast Asia and East Asia regions for investment.

Readers may recall that GREE also invested in DCM-managed A-Fund, which invests in promising companies that contribute to the Android ecosystem.
