It isn’t often that a famous rapper decides to use your product. And when they do, you milk the heck out of it.
Which was precisely what Singapore-based startup ReferralCandy did, when they sent SGE this press release.
Soulja Boy, a Grammy nominated artist well-known for his triple platinum hit single “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”, was seeking new ways to tell his fans about his new business, Ocean Gang Clothing. He used ReferralCandy, and as a result the business was able to generate thousands of dollars in referral sales within the first few weeks.
The company runs an online service that tracks and rewards customers for successful rewards. In turn, the merchant that uses ReferralCandy gets more sales.
ReferralCandy also has the ability to let fans participate in a referral program before making a purchase. As a result, Ocean Gang Clothing received hundreds of referral account signups in the first day. Fans could spread the love without even being customers yet.
“The ReferralCandy app was easy to set up and we were up and running in no time,” says Darrin Young, president of Ocean Gang Clothing. “We were impressed at how quickly word-of-mouth spread as soon as we started with the ReferralCandy service.”
Granted, Soulja Boy’s recent albums have performed way below expectations, but he still commands a sizable following online, collecting 3.5 million Twitter followers and 6.6 million Facebook likes.
With the attention they generate, celebrity endorsements can give startups a massive boon. Stars like Ashton Kutcher and Justin Bieber understand this, using their massive audience to publicize the startups they invest in.
