Hello there,
I remember when Grab played the plucky startup that could, starting out by just trying to hail a taxi in Malaysia a less painful experience.
As it vaulted into decacorn status, it rebranded from MyTeksi to Grab, and from being an ride-hailing app to a do-everything super app. What hasn’t changed is its green color and its co-founders, Anthony Tan and Hooi Ling Tan.
While Grab may call its millions of drivers and merchants partners, its top management is decidedly less populated.
In this week’s Big Story, my colleague Budi maps out who these people are and what their roles tell us about where Grab’s priorities lie in the region – especially in the Grab Financial Group (GFG) side.
Digging into the work history of this diverse group of managers also reveals some interesting directions Grab could be headed in or has decided to pivot away from.
Our second Big Story, a community piece by Tonik CEO Greg Krasnov, discusses whether buy now, pay later has reached rock bottom, with Sweden-headquartered Klarna on Monday announcing that it would be laying off 10% of its global workforce.
Meanwhile, in this week’s Hot Take, I look at how consumers’ love of comparing products extends to retail investors in robo-advisory services and how their confidence in these services compare to major players investing in the industry.
