GoTo Group has launched a feature on the Gojek and Tokopedia apps aimed at supporting individuals with difficulty distinguishing colors, medically known as color vision deficiency

INDONESIA – 11 December 2023 – PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (the “Company” or “GoTo Group”), the largest digital ecosystem in Indonesia, has launched a feature on the Gojek and Tokopedia apps aimed at supporting individuals with difficulty distinguishing colors, medically known as color vision deficiency.1 This feature also complements the GoPay app, which was already designed in adherence to international accessibility standards. By unveiling this cutting-edge feature ahead of this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the GoTo Group demonstrates its unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive digital ecosystem for app users at large. It is also part of the Company’s Three Zeros Sustainability Commitment.

“In line with our Three Zeros Sustainability Commitment, specifically the Zero Barriers principle, the latest feature on Gojek and Tokopedia is expected to help app users with color vision deficiency by giving them the freedom to choose the display mode that best suits their needs when using the Gojek app as well as the Tokopedia app and website,” said Tanah Sullivan, head of sustainability at GoTo Group.

“Users can adjust the screen colors and increase the contrast between text and its background, hence improving readability and reducing eye strain, especially in brightly lit environments. These adjustments were made following the AAA contrast standard, which is the highest accessibility standard from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG),” Sullivan added.

In addition to Indonesia, users in Vietnam and Singapore can also use the contrast mode in the Gojek app.

New features on the Gojek, Tokopedia, and GoPay platforms

  • The Gojek app provides a high-contrast mode tailored to users with total color blindness (rod monochromacy).
  • Both the Tokopedia app and website offer features accommodating people with color deficiency vision in the red-green and blue-yellow spectrums.
  • The GoPay app adheres to the WCAG contrast standards, ensuring users’ convenience with the light-mode and dark-mode display options.

Fardhan Ramzy, a GoTo app user with color vision deficiency, considers GoTo’s latest features truly helpful, saying “As a survivor of partial color blindness, I deeply appreciate GoTo’s efforts through the Tokopedia and Gojek apps in creating features that are relevant to various groups including color-blindness survivors. With this feature, making online transactions on Tokopedia and Gojek has become more convenient and hassle-free.”

How to enable the feature on the Gojek and Tokopedia apps

The new accessibility feature will be available to iOS device users once they update the Gojek app to the latest version, which is version v4.79.0, and the Tokopedia app to version 2.245.0 via the App Store. This feature will gradually be made available to Android users.

To enable the Contrast Mode on the Gojek app, users can go to the app’s main page, click the profile button at the top right corner of the screen, and then select “App accessibility.” App users can adjust the contrast by following these steps:

For iOS app users

  1. Click on the “Contrast” setting;
  2. Choose one of the four display modes:
    1. Default (standard Gojek display)
    2. Increased contrast (for users with difficulty distinguishing colors)
    3. Use device setting (The contrast in the Gojek app will follow the accessibility settings on the user’s device.)
  3. Close and reopen the app to see the changes.

For Android app users

  1. Set the toggle to on to enable “Contrast” mode
  2. Set the toggle to off to disable the “Contrast” mode
  3. Close and reopen the app to see the changes.

To enable special screen mode on Tokopedia:

  1. On the main page of the iOS version of the app,
    1. Click ☰ at the top right and then click ⚙
    2. Select “App Settings”
    3. Click “Screen Mode”
    4. Choose one of the four display modes:
      1. “Light Mode” (default color display)
      2. “Dark Mode” (dark color display)
      3. “Protanopia & Deuteranopia” for users with difficulty distinguishing red and green
      4. “Tritanopia” for users with a difficulty distinguishing blue and yellow
  2. On the homepage of the Tokopedia website, hover over the profile photo at the top right corner of the screen, then select “Settings” and click on “Screen Mode.”

1 According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health, there are three types of color vision deficiency: (1) red-green color deficiency, (2) blue-yellow color deficiency, and (3) total color blindness or rod monochromacy, in which individuals can only perceive black and white.
