Google’s new rules spell trouble for Indonesian apps

Hi there,

Much of my daily routine runs on Google.

Interviews and social meetups to be scheduled? Google Calendar. Drafts and datasets to work on? Google Docs and Google Sheets. Fitness tracking? Google Fit. Need to look up anything on the web? Just Google.

That said, Google doesn’t run my life. Over in Indonesia however, the tech giant’s new Play Store rules – which require apps to pay a 15% to 30% revenue fee – could be problematic for many startups.

As Google’s policy comes into effect, my colleague Jofie looks at how it has upended the fortunes of many Indonesian firms over the last few months.

A surge in app fees isn’t the only headwind startups are facing. As VC funding dries up and inflation soars to record highs, Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia and India partner Pui Yan Leung shares her advice to founders looking to thrive amid the turmoil in this week’s Making Waves.
