Together with illustrator Christoph Niemann, The Google Chrome team used HTML5 to create a gorgeous interactive book to share what they learned about the Internet and browsers.
20 things can be scaled down to 3 main learning points:
(1) First, this interactive book will first take you through the backbone of the Internet and how it is used today through cloud computing and web apps. (2) Then it will introduce the building blocks of web pages like HTML and JavaScript. (3) Lastly, it will share web innovations and technologies that will provide faster and better web experience in the future.
If you don’t have the time to finish reading 20 things (61 pages in total), make sure you spend some time on thing 18. In thing 18, it talks about Google’s vision for the web, which is essentially speed. Videos and images are two visual elements that make the web appealing and interactive. But they are usually large in size and affect page load. Google’s recommendation on video is to use HTML5 tags. Apple, another HTML5 advocator, has some examples to show.
For images, Google is currently experimenting new ways to compress images further without compromising quality. So far, the result has been promising. A new image format called WebP has managed to reduce the file size by 39%. Web browsers also play an important role in web speed. Modern browsers are now powered by fast JavaScript engines, which allow them to process more complex JavaScript code seamlessly. DNS pre-resolution is also another technique used by modern browsers to load web page more quickly. In a nutshell, these techniques would load a page as soon as a user clicks it. “Someday, browsers might be able to predict before the page loads.” How exciting!
