Google DeepMind CEO steps down in Alphabet AI reshuffle

Alphabet said on August 5 that it was overhauling its AI leadership. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis will become Alphabet’s chief scientist and Google DeepMind chairman, while CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over day-to-day management.

The changes come as Google faces pressure over its AI position after the flagship version of its latest Gemini model missed a planned June launch.

Alphabet shares fell 4% after the announcement.

Alphabet also said Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le were leaving to start Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on machine learning, science, and engineering.

The startup has received investment from Google and signed a partnership with Google Cloud for computing capacity.

The departures add to recent losses in Google’s AI team. Noam Shazeer left for OpenAI in June, and John Jumper said that same week he would join Anthropic.
