Google DeepMind, Agile Robots partner on industrial robotics

Agile Robots SE has entered a research partnership with Google DeepMind to integrate DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics foundation models into Agile Robots’ hardware and industrial robotics platform for industrial deployments.

The companies said they will jointly deploy robots, collect operational data, and use it to train and refine models, with initial work focused on manufacturing and other industrial tasks where reliability and scale are important.

Agile Robots CEO Zhaopeng Chen said the company has installed more than 20,000 robotics solutions worldwide, while Google DeepMind’s head of robotics Carolina Parada said the partnership will support development of more advanced robot AI models.

The partnership will initially focus on high-value industrial use cases in sectors with growing demand for adaptable, reliable automation.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Google’s new partner is a fast-growing industrial automation company

  • Agile Robots CEO Zhaopeng Chen reported that the company has installed more than 20,000 robotics solutions worldwide.
  • Agile Robots is teaming up with Google DeepMind to add DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics foundation models to Agile Robots’ hardware and industrial robotics platform for factory deployments.
  • The companies plan to roll out robots together, gather day-to-day operating data, then use it to train and tune the models. Early work targets manufacturing and other industrial jobs that demand reliability at scale.
  • Carolina Parada, Google DeepMind’s head of robotics, said the partnership will help build more capable robot AI models.

Google is building an “Android of robotics” plan through Intrinsic, while adding partners

  • The agreement fits Google’s broader robotics effort. Google has said Intrinsic, its robotics software company, aims to be “The Android of robotics,” and Intrinsic moved from “Other Bets” into the main company 1.
  • Google is adding Agile Robots to partnerships that already include Boston Dynamics and Apptronik. The goal is more real-world deployment data to improve its models 1.
  • The setup creates an “AI flywheel.” Field data strengthens the models, and stronger models widen the tasks robots can handle, which supports broader rollouts 2.
  • This strategy puts Google in closer competition with Amazon and Tesla in bringing AI into robotics 1.
