US investor Goodwater raises $1b for global consumer tech bets

Goodwater Capital has raised US$1 billion for its early- and growth-stage funds, focusing on startups from a wide range of industries such as healthcare, edtech, and mobility.

Based in the US, the VC firm has more than US$3.3 billion in capital across nine funds and supports founders from 19 countries. According to Tech in Asia data, it has made 23 investments in Southeast Asia so far. It also participated in 26 deals in India and 22 in South Korea.

“This new capital will fuel our global investing approach and strengthen our position as the best consumer tech investing platform in the world,” said Chi-Hua Chien, co-founder and managing partner at Goodwater Capital.

The firm told TechCrunch that about 60% of the newly raised funds will be going to seed- and early-stage startups. According to the publication, more than half of Goodwater Capital’s committed investments was spread out to companies outside North America.

Some of its portfolio companies include Indian audiobook startup PocketFM, Singaporean payments and remittance company Poko, Vietnamese super app MoMo, and South Korean fintech platform Toss.

Additionally, Goodwater Capital said it has invested in over 600 seed-stage companies so far through its Genesis program. Investees of the program are also given access to the VC firm’s insights, consumer tech resources, and community.

Goodwater Capital’s partners have worked with companies like Facebook, Spotify, Twitter, and Coupang.
