Matchday will launch Matchday Challenge: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Edition, a FIFA-licensed product, followed by a casual mobile game in 2023.
Matchday Challenge is a social gaming experience that allows players to challenge friends to World Cup predictions. They win by making the most accurate predictions and collecting Matchday cards of footballers who perform the best during the tournament.
The company will offer these player cards through blockchain tech, featuring the official name, image, and likeness of professional men’s and women’s football players.
The cards that players collect during this World Cup will continue to be playable in future Matchday games.
The multi-year partnership will also bring over officially other FIFA intellectual property and its other tournaments onto the Matchday platform.
Established earlier this year, the firm was founded by Derrick Ko, Razmig Hovaghimian, Benny Wong, and Sebastien de Halleux – tech and gaming veterans who started and sold companies like Glu Mobile, Hoodline, Viki, and Playfish.
“Our free-to-play experiences are centered around Matchday player cards – featuring real football players – and the amazing community of football fans,” said Matchday co-founder and chief gaming officer Sebastien de Halleux.
The startup has also onboarded football player Alexia Putellas as their founding global ambassador, advisor, and investor to “elevate women’s football on Matchday.”
With this, Matchday now has 20 football ambassadors globally in addition to Lionel Messi, who backed the firm through his new investment firm, Play Time.
