TikTok’s Indian rival Roposo enters Indonesia

Roposo, an India-based entertainment platform, has launched in Indonesia – just weeks after the Indonesian government’s TikTok Shop ban.

However, Roposo has clarified that while its Indian app offers ecommerce features, the Indonesian version doesn’t do so. Instead, the focus is on expanding its user base and supporting the creator ecosystem in the country, said Mansi Jain, senior vice president and general manager of Roposo.

“When, and if we plan to enter the live-commerce entertainment space in Indonesia, it will be very much in line with the regulations,” Jain told Tech in Asia.

Like TikTok, Roposo lets creators upload short videos onto its app. In India, its online shopping feature facilitates more than 100,000 daily transactions with over 80 million active users.

Notably, it gained traction last year, soon after the Indian government banned TikTok.

Roposo’s entry into Indonesia follows its parent company Glance, an AI software company that delivers personalized content on device lock screens. Roposo has been testing over 40 livestreams daily on Glance in Indonesia for the past five months, with an average daily viewership of approximately 1 million.

The company aims to increase this number to 10 million within the next year.

More than 200 creators have already joined Roposo in Indonesia, the company said. The platform plans to partner with at least 1,000 more in the next three to four quarters.

Despite the Indonesia entry, Jain said that the company has no plans to expand across Southeast Asia, citing Indonesia’s market potential.

“For example, Glance in Indonesia already has 50 million users,” she explained. “It’s all about the scale we can achieve in the market.”

In the coming quarters, its expansion targets include the US, Brazil, and Japan.
