Foxconn shifts focus from Apple as AI servers drive growth

Foxconn’s revenue from AI servers and other cloud and networking products overtook its earnings from smart consumer products like iPhones for the first time in Q2 2025.

The Taiwan-based manufacturer, known as the primary assembler for Apple’s iPhones, now counts Nvidia among its major clients for AI servers.

This shift reflects a broader trend in Taiwan’s tech sector, as companies move to reduce dependence on smartphones amid slowing sales growth.

Foxconn began investing in AI servers, EVs, and semiconductors under chairman Young Liu, but so far only its AI server business has made a significant impact on revenue.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Strategic manufacturing pivots can reshape 50-year-old business models

Foxconn’s transformation from smartphone assembler to AI infrastructure leader demonstrates how established manufacturers can successfully reinvent their core business.

The company’s revenue mix shifted dramatically in Q2 2025, with consumer electronics dropping to just 35% of total revenue while cloud and networking products jumped to 41% 1.

This represents a fundamental business model change for a company founded in 1974 that built its reputation manufacturing electrical components before becoming Apple’s primary iPhone assembler 2.

The scale of this transformation becomes clearer when considering Foxconn generated $152 billion in revenue in 2018 primarily as Apple’s largest contract manufacturer 3.

Now the company commands nearly 40% market share in both general-purpose and AI servers, positioning itself as a dominant player in an entirely different industry segment 1.

2️⃣ Early strategic bets on emerging technologies can create massive competitive advantages

Foxconn’s current AI server dominance stems from investments made years before the technology became mainstream.

Chairman Young Liu began championing AI servers and other new businesses when he took over in 2019, well before ChatGPT sparked the AI boom in late 2022 1.

This three-year head start allowed Foxconn to build the capabilities and partnerships that now drive explosive growth. The company projects a 170% increase in AI server revenue for Q3 2025 compared to the previous year 1.
