7 kinds of players on the first day of Dota 2’s Year Beast event

Yesterday was the first day of the Year Beast event and players were able to take part in this New Bloom Festival game mode for 24 hours. And so, from personal experience, accounts from friends, and posts from the /r/dota2 subreddit, here are seven different kinds of players on the first day of the Year Beast event. Which one are you?

1. The guy who spends all his Flamesalt Ingots in one go

This person got too excited and just jumped into the game without reading or testing his theories in practice mode. As such, he got excited and bought as many Divine Rapiers as his money could afford. After all, that’s what you do when you fight Roshan at the end of Diretide, right? Unfortunately, this isn’t Diretide and Flamesalt Ingots are consumable. That means once you spend a certain amount, they are gone for good. So this guy ends up sitting in front of his computer and, realizing that he’s broke in terms of Flamesalt Ingots, starts pondering on how he can keep playing the game, and may eventually evolve into the next guy.

2. The guy who has no Flamesalt Ingots, but insists on fighting the Year Beast

After exhausting all his Flamesalt Ingots or not collecting enough prior to the Year Beast event, this guy just refuses to back down. There are two kinds of this player. First is the one who grits his teeth and still tries even without items, and the second is the one who insists that other players buy him items. We’re still not sure why he thinks he can demand people buy him items, but this person also thinks it is reasonable to report someone who refuses his demands.

3. The guy who gets reported for not buying items for his teammates

This is the guy who is at the receiving end of guy number two. He has enough Ingots for himself, but doesn’t have enough to buy items for his teammates. Now some people (see above) just don’t understand being reasonable, so like spoiled brats, they report this poor soul for being “uncooperative”.

4. The guy who didn’t collect enough Flamesalt Ingots

You know how you thought that having 1,000 Flamesalt Ingots is enough? Well, this guy realized that was a wrong assumption. Apparently, having a thousand or so of the currency is not enough if you want to take on the Year Beast multiple times. This guy then sat down to see how best he should use his Flamesalt Ingots. Have you experienced being a college student who is so short on allowance that every expenditure becomes questionable? That’s how it feels. How do I know? I didn’t collect enough Flamesalt Ingots either.

5. The guy who doesn’t want to blindly spend Flamesalt Ingots

This guy may or may not have enough Flamesalt Ingots, but one thing’s for sure: if he’s spending any of it, it has to be a good reason. As such, this person decided to study the whole concept of the Year Beast first. Aside from computing for the best way to spend his Flamesalt Ingots and crafting his own theories, this guy also trawled the Dota 2 subreddit just in case he overlooked something. You don’t put all eggs in one basket after all.

6. The guy who didn’t know about the Ursa and Wraith King patch

During the first few hours of the Year Beast event, Ursa and Wraith King were the heroes to pick. Wraith King’s Vampiric Aura causes nearby allied units to gain hit points based on the amount of damage they deal. Ursa’s Fury Swipes, on the other hand, stacks bonus damage for consecutive attacks to the same enemy. When used in combination, it means a massive amount of damage and a great deal of survivability. Because of this overpowered combination, Valve released a patch update on the same day, rendering the Year Beast immune to Fury Swipes and Vampiric Aura. Unfortunately, not everyone read the details of the patch and still proceeded to use the combo anyway.

7. The guy who couldn’t play because it’s a weekday

Ah, yes, painful. I recall seeing posts on my news feed and on some forums about why the Year Beast was on a weekday for only 24 hours. Although it is expected that the Year Beast would return because it works in cycles, it’s still quite punishing to know that everyone’s playing on the first day of the Year Beast event and you’re not because you had to work on things that have nothing to do with Dota 2.
