When two of the largest Twitter nations clash for a final game – Japan vs United States – we know that the rate of tweets-per-second (TPS) is going to be high.
According to Twitter, the final game commanded 7,196 tweets per second at its climax, surpassing the TPS of Prince William and Kate’s wedding and the death of Osama bin Laden, as reported by the AP.
While U.S President Barack Obama was gracious enough to congratulate both teams, there were many who let their emotions get the better of them and tweeted nasty stuff about the Japanese. As we told you earlier today, it was not only “Congrats Japan” that was on Twitter’s trending list, but both “Japs” and “Pearl Harbor” were also on it.
While I’d like to say that the hateful comments were only a small minority of this record-breaking Twitter party, the trending topics list appeared to say otherwise — so perhaps this milestone really isn’t something that we should be celebrating at all.
For the record, I’m based in Singapore and my history textbooks do tell a tale of the dark times when our country was under the Japanese occupation. But I also do remember that my teacher told us that all these were the past – “Forget the past and embrace the future,” she said.
