Facebook Places coming to Singapore and Hong Kong next week

During Wednesday Facebook event at Beer Market, Stephen Chun, Director of Asia Pacific, Facebook Singapore, announced that Facebook Places will be available for users in Singapore and Hong Kong starting next week.

If you haven’t already known, Facebook Places is a location-based service that allows you to check-in to locations with your friends. Facebook aptly described Places as who, what, when and now where.

There is competition: Both Singapore and Hong Kong are avid Foursquare and Jiepang users respectively. But dominance within the location-based service market could shift with the introduction of Facebook Places.

After all, your entire network is on Facebook. It makes more sense to check in on Facebook than on other services. At least, that was what I felt when I was in the U.S. I realized I use Facebook Places more than Foursquare or Gowalla.

With Facebook Places in, Deals will follow suit as well. But Facebook Deals will be rolled out in “a couple of months time”, Mr Chun told Penn Olson.

Facebook Deals allows brands to interact and reward fans through Facebook Places. It’s simple, brands can set the appropriate deals to reward users for checking in to their locations. Location-based marketing is growing in popularity because it brings foot traffic to stores. The chance of getting a sale would certainly be higher too. There are 4 ways to set up your Deals : Individual, Loyalty, Friend and Charity Deals.

That’s it for now. We’ll report as we learn more (Advertisers take note). You may also wish to check out this post “Facebook is eating Foursquare’s Lunch“. It includes a downloadable report on Facebook Deals.
