Facebook Kills Social Media Suicide Service

On their site, Web 2.0 Suicide Machine states that it has helped 891 people delete their online identities. 58,401 friends have been unfriended, and 230,922 tweets have been removed since launching.

Facebook didn’t seem to like these social media site suicides.

To start off 2010, Facebook has banned the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine IP address. Therefore, you can no longer use the service to commit Facebook suicide. When you go to the site, a pop-up message appears from the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine team indicating what happened and that they are trying to find a workaround.

Facebook released a statement about the ban, “Facebook provides the ability for people who no longer want to use the site to either deactivate their account or delete it completely. Web 2.0 Suicide Machine collects login credentials and scrapes Facebook pages, which are violations of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. We’ve blocked the site’s access to Facebook as is our policy for sites that violate our SRR. We’re currently investigating and considering whether to take further action.”

It seems that Facebook is trying to make it hard for users to delete their accounts. Last week, they shut down another similar service, Seppukoo, which also killed your Facebook account, if desired. This story is definitely going to develop in the near future because the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine team is trying to find a workaround, and Facebook is considering further action. Definitely going to keep my eye out on this developing story.
