We know social media can be useful for many things, from business to politics. To add to the list, Indonesian students have developed one popular social media platform into a tool to catch ATM burglars.
No, this is not like catching a burglar when he forgot to log out from his Facebook account. So how does the system work?
Well, these four students from Gajahmada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta designed a special sensor system for the ATM machine. This tool is connected to a Facebook or Twitter account which can only be accessed by the Police. So when the ATM machine is robbed, the system will automatically inform to the Facebook/Twitter account holder the location of the theft and all the relevant details.
The tool was first created last January by Muhammad Anis Al Hilmi, Abdul Rokhman As Syukur, Fajar Aji Nugroho, and Sean Satya Henura for a national science competition. Under the supervision of Danang Lelono, a lecturer from Faculty of Mathematics and Science at UGM, the tool won a gold medal. The Yogyakarta City Police Force has already tested it and highly appreciates these efforts of these smart students. The tool they made is worth about US$1,180 and may be adopted by some local banks in the near future.
Muhammad Anis Al Hilmi, one of the team members who is also a creator of local digital magazine JurnaLISTRIK told us:
There aren’t many technopreneurs in Indonesia, and as we are students majoring in electronics and instruments, we would like to dig more into technology and develop it into something that is really useful for this country.
It’s good to know that Indonesian’s love for social media has eventually developed into something useful.
