How a Student Uses Facebook to Campaign for a Social Media Internship

This post is authored for Stephanie, our very own writer, for her application to be Standard Chartered Breeze‘s World Coolest Intern (WCI). We promise this is a good read.

USA-OBAMA/GERMANYWhat would you do if you only had 5 days to campaign for a lucrative social media internship? It’s the world’s coolest and probably also the highest paid.

In this internship, you get to learn from social media experts, access Twitter and Facebook during work hours and get paid SGD $5,000 (USD $3,800) every month. It’s the perfect internship for many, but only one will emerge as the coolest intern.

You have to compete. Stephanie did and emerged as one of the world’s top 10 applicants. As many of you would have heard, applicants are required to start a campaign, grow their digital footprint and impress the Standard Chartered Breeze team. Witnessing these campaigns is akin to a flashback of the U.S Presidential Election in 2008, just on smaller scale.

Like many applicants, Stephanie learned about this internship application late. 5 days were all she got but she masterfully devised a campaign, so fundamental and viral that it would make mediocre social media marketers ashamed of themselves. Over the course of the campaign, she has managed to gather over 500 fans organically, over 100 images with ‘stooffi for wci’ dedication and has received over 500 feedback on her fan page. With zero dollars invested, these statistics are pretty awesome.

In this post, I’ll unveil what Stephanie did to achieve the results. I challenge you to learn from a student who hasn’t even officially worked in the industry. Read on.

1. Target Audience Defined

Mann in der Mitte

Stephanie started by defining her target audience. To gain massive support within 5 days, her friends would be the easiest target and Facebook naturally became her choice of platform.

“I didn’t want to simply blast a request to each friend, begging for support. I don’t think it reflects quality support anyway. It just not my style. Instead, I decided to focus on engagement and fun to draw people to the page, and sustain their interest. I wanted to make conversations personal and let them know that I really appreciated each and every supporter. And I think that’s the essence of social media – fostering relations through micro conversations.” said Stephanie.
