Asia has 143 million Facebook users

Facebook has more than 600 million users across the world and 143 million of them are from Asia, according to Socialbaker, a social analytics company. In other words, almost 1 out of every 4 Facebook users is an Asian.

Indonesia leads Facebook Asia with more than 34 million users. The second largest Facebook nation in Asia is Philippines with over 22 million users and third goes to India with 20 million.

Asia is on the rise and Facebook is riding on the wave. Or rather, we should give credit to Facebook’s compelling network effect. Facebook has helped Asia connect with the world.

Most of the top ten Asian Facebook countries are experiencing strong growth rate. The only countries with slow growth rates include Hong Kong and Israel, which had already achieved high Facebook penetration rates. But the pattern doesn’t apply in Taiwan. Despite having a 51 percent penetration, Facebook in Taiwan continues to grow strongly (25 percent). Farmville is believed to be one the key reasons why Taiwanese are joining Facebook. My four months experience in Taiwan confirmed that: Farmville was on most students’ laptop screens as I walked across the library.

South Korea Facebooked?

Is South Korea Facebooked? The statistics seem to suggest a yes. Facebook in South Korea is growing at a whopping 31 percent rate and currently has more 3.6 million users. A Facebook page titled ‘South Korea’ has gathered more than 145,000 ‘likes’. Many Koreans fans have written “해피 음력 설날” (happy new year) on its wall, showing signs of Korean network on Facebook.

However, Facebook will face challenge from Twitter as the micro-blogging site has recently launched Twitter in Korean. But it wouldn’t be much of a clash if Koreans can see Facebook and Twitter as two separate social platforms. One for social networking and another for news.
