Update (June 24, 11 a.m. SGT): This article was updated with comments from a Gojek spokesperson.
Gojek has confirmed to Tech in Asia that the ride-hailing giant has no plans to enter the Malaysian market after reports of a car with the company’s logo sparked rumors of its expansion plans.
The company said that the vehicle spotted was being filmed as part of an upcoming campaign that is expected to be released later this year. A black Honda City car with a Gojek sticker on the side was reportedly seen filming in Kuala Lumpur while a traffic policeman was guarding the shooting spot.
There are 33 e-hailing companies registered with them as of June 2022, according to Malaysia’s Land Public Transport Agency. The list does not include Gojek.
In 2019, the Indonesian firm considered running pilot trials in Malaysia after the government agreed to give the company’s motorcycle ride-hailing services a principal approval in the country. Gojek had also announced plans to enter the Malaysian market by 2020.
However, Malaysia’s government made a u-turn on motorcycle ride hailing in 2021, citing high death rates involving motorcyclists in road accidents.
