As someone who’s played and loved video games since I was seven years old, I feel like almost any time the industry is talked about in a business sense, it feels utterly disconnected from the players.

Whether it’s the normalization of downloadable content or microtransactions, it seems like people now think about the business behind video games before even considering what makes a title fun or interesting. That’s why we end up with a bunch of dumpster-level crap, particularly on mobile, because the approach is ass backwards.

(It’s also why almost everything I play now comes from indie developers – because I think that’s the only remaining bastion of games being actually developed for players instead of being seen as “potential revenue sources.”)

To be fair, the traditional games industry isn’t great either. It’s rife with toxic work environments and ridiculous amounts of crunch time.

I don’t have a solution to any of this – I guess I just felt like ranting a bit. It’s pretty disheartening to think about the industry sometimes.
