Cyanogen reportedly will team up with Micromax to enter India

California-based ROM maker Cyanogen is working with Indian smartphone maker Micromax to bring the powerful CyanogenMod experience to domestic consumers, according to The Information (hat-tip Android Authority).

Further details on the partnership are scarce, but it will likely involve Micromax releasing a Cyanogen-powered device. This would place the manufacturer in competition with Oppo, which brought its Cyanogen-powered N1 Smartphone to India in February, along with OnePlus, which expressed its interest in the market last July on its fan forums.

Based on the Android Open Source Project, CyanogenMod is designed to increase the performance and reliability of Android phones released by vendors and carriers like Google, T-Mobile, and HTC, which come with their own ROMS pre-installed. It began as a hobby for its founders before they incorporated in September 2013.

Micromax is the second biggest smartphone maker in India with 18 percent market share after Samsung, which holds 29 percent, according to a report by IDC that measures device shipments. The company recently introduced the Canvas A1 as part of the Android One program, which marks Google’s attempt to offer a Nexus-like experience in India’s budget smartphone segment.
