The e-commerce scene in Indonesia is still underdeveloped, but some good news continues to surface here. And the latest that we’ve heard is from eBay, as the company claims that the country’s export sales on eBay.com have increased 17 percent in the past year.
According to a statement sent to Penn-Olson, Jason Lee, director of eBay South East Asia and Middle East, feels that Indonesian exporters hold great potential for the company. And with the country’s continuous economic growth, he believes exporters will continue to use eBay to support as well as to boost their overseas sales.
There are several categories in eBay Indonesia’s top exports list – most of them are related to the fashion industry. Clothing and accessories lead the way, followed by jewelry and gems; and then there are also watches, computers, sports equipment, and mobile phones.

eBay predicts that the growth in those categories will continue as Indonesian exporters move in greater number to sell their products on eBay US, Australia, and UK.
The scenario is not far from what Oliver Hua (pictured right), COO of eBay Greater China, South East Asia, shared with us at the IDBYTE conference in Jakarta. He said that Indonesia has huge e-commerce potential and eBay plans to ride the trend. With more than 97 million users around the globe and many more joining in, eBay does look attractive for Indonesian exporters.
“We’re starting to take a closer look at Indonesia as we try to ride the trend of this emerging market and increasing savvy Internet users,” said Hua.
