Oliver Hua, COO of eBay Greater China, SEA, and Japan is next on stage at IDBYTE 2011. He will talk about the e-commerce market and trends in Indonesia, from eBay’s perspective.
#11:42: “eBay is one of the pioneers in the e-commerce industry but we really feel that e-commerce still has much room to grow globally.”
#11:45: Hua shares McKinsey research stating that the Internet has helped the economy and society, even in developing countries. A total of $8 trillion in transactions are exchanged via the Internet. “In Indonesia, many people are using their mobile phones to purchase online.”
#11:49: Hua shares some trends in the e-commerce world. First trend: Mobile applications and mobile devices will be huge. Second trend: Local applications – Allow people to search prices locally while on the go, compare prices etc. Third trend: Social. For example, Groupon leverages the social crowd to drive prices low. Fourth trend: Digital. A lot of content (products) are turning digital.
#11:50: eBay has 100 million active users and a huge group of people are using it as primary or secondary source of income. Hua says that eBay is constantly increasing its business portfolio to ride on the trend of mobile, local, social, and digital.
#11:53: “We’re starting to take a closer look at Indonesia as we try to ride the trend of this emerging market and increasing savvy Internet users.” On eBay, a pair of shoes is sold every three seconds and a car every one minute.
#11:56: Indonesia has huge e-commerce potential, he explains. “Indonesia is still undeveloped and internet penetration is still low. But we see potential here.”
There is huge opportunity here for users to use the internet via the mobile platform. Hua believes that social network will evolve into commerce eventually, using China’s Tencent as an example. “We believe Indonesia could see the same trend.”
#12:01: There is a lot of interest in Indonesian e-commerce market – Rakuten, Multiply. So what’s eBay strategy here in Indonesia?
“eBays wants to present Indonesian merchandisers to over 95.7 million buyers around the world. We will participate in Indonesia e-commerce with local experts.”
#12:04: “We believe that Indonesia will be one of the trends in eBay’s growth.”
