Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing’s firm to focus on funding SEA’s tech startups

“Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing’s private investment firm Horizons Ventures will make Southeast Asia a priority, with the region’s digital economy booming as the pandemic drives more people to use the internet,” reported Bloomberg.

Details:

  • Horizon Ventures will focus primarily on the Indonesian market, said the firm’s co-founder Solina Chau.
  • It has partnered with Alpha JWC Ventures to identify startups that could become the next largest company in the region.

Context:

  • In the past year, Horizon Ventures and Alpha JWC have invested in Southeast Asian startups such as Indonesian coffee startup Kopi Kenangan, online stock brokerage Ajaib, and capsule hotel startup Bobobox.
  • Horizon Ventures was also an early investor in popular video-conferencing startup Zoom, and its stake in the company has contributed to the rise in Li’s wealth during the pandemic.
