The firms keeping SEA in the pink of health

Welcome to On the Rise! Delivered every Tuesday via email and through the Tech in Asia website, this free newsletter breaks down the biggest stories and trends in emerging tech. If you’re not a subscriber, get access by registering here.

Hi there,

Writing newsletters is a wild ride: Sometimes we have to make the most of just a trickle, other times there’s a river of stories backed by data and numbers.

It’s the latter case this week and we have two Big Stories for you, and they’re as different as chalk and cheese.

The chalk: My colleague, Tian Wen, has a visuals-driven update on Southeast Asia’s healthtech landscape. His exploration of an industry in good health comes through charts and graphs. In fact, just as we send this out, yet another healthtech firm has raised good monies: Singapore’s Docquity has raised US$44 million in series C money.

The cheese: Collin spent some time peering through the filings of a company, whose parent firm is among the most widely known content platforms in the world, and whose founder is incorrectly called Nas. (Folks, Nuseir Yassin is likely tired of being called by his firm’s name.)

The other Big Story we have today talks about how Nas Academy, Nas Daily’s edtech venture, is busy building up on revenue streams – it just added a new product to help content creators launch and manage their own communities. Do you think Yassin’s popularity – and that of his fellow educators – has brought in good numbers? The answer is yes, but read the story for the full picture.

Meanwhile, I’ve begun to piece together what’s likely to be a long and significant chapter in Indonesia’s history, one that rests on the cusp of several things all at once: transportation, natural resources, investor enthusiasm, and a loudspeaker shared both by startups as well as large corporations. Stay with me as we take a quick look at what’s driving Indonesia’s EV story in this edition of Making Waves.
