Drinking with Mario

So, last night three friends and I got together to play the new Super Mario 3D World.
We had done something similar a week after the launch of Super Mario Bros U and had actually been disappointed by the multiplayer experience. The screen was too small, one player was always too fast and even the easiest jump was ruined by accidental head-stompings, and after the disappointment of Super Mario Party Island Tour (seriously who is thinking of these names?) we didn’t have high expectations. So we made a back-up plan.

Beer!

A solid plan!

But boy were we surprised! The game was great and we played together for hours, without getting bored or frustrated (with one another). The levels were fantastic, unique, colorful and fun, the characters were awesome and the power ups looked awesome and were actually useful. The Fireflower now looks legitimately badass so spewing balls of glowing flame has never been cooler.

For a few hours we played the game normally but then the beer began to kick in and by the time the Tsingtao (our local beverage) had had its way with us our abilities were somewhat limited, so we began doing something new. Mario Drinking Games! (patent pending)

Below are the games and their descriptions:

Mario Drinking Game (MDG) No.1: Catch the King

Nintendo were thinking of us when they made this picture.

In the Super Mario 3D World there is a ranking system, this system is purely for bragging rights and the winner at the end of the level is given a crown to wear throughout the next level. When we realized this crown could be stolen with a well-timed jump or swipe, a new game was born! The aim of the game was to end the game wearing the crown. No other rules applied.

Winner doesn’t drink.

Everyone else finishes their drink.

MDG No.2: Bruise the Peach

Princess Peach is special, not in a strange fan-fic way, but in the fact that she can very briefly hover in the air. Anyone who has played Super Mario 3D World understand how game changing this is and anyone who has played Bruise the Peach knows how it’s her secret weapon. The aim of Bruise the Peach is simple….. Kill Princess Peach. A goal that I have secretly harbored for some time.

Seriously, watching Mario, Luigi and Toad fall simultaneously into a pool of lava having messed up a carefully orchestrated synchronised stomp on Peach is even more fun than it sounds.
