In a disaster area? Facebook lets you notify loved ones that youโ€™re safe

safety check facebook

Over a thousand people have died in an earthquake that shook Nepal, home to Mount Everest. For the multitudes more in the area, their friends and family would hope theyโ€™re safe. In the wake of the calamity, Facebook released a feature called Safety Check that allows users in a disaster area to quickly tell loved ones that theyโ€™re okay.

Hereโ€™s how it works: if Facebook detects that you may be near a danger zone, itโ€™ll ask you if youโ€™re safe. You can either select โ€œIโ€™m safeโ€ or โ€œIโ€™m not in the area.โ€ The feature also allows users to see who might be in the area and whether theyโ€™ve indicated theyโ€™re alright.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg posted a status update announcing the feature. He said: โ€œWhen disasters happen, people need to know their loved ones are safe. Itโ€™s moments like this that being able to connect really matters. My thoughts are with everyone whoโ€™s been caught up in this tragedy.โ€

The feature has limitations though. Natural disasters can knock out electrical power and disable internet or cellular infrastructure, leaving users unable to access the Internet. But for those who can access Facebook, Safety Check gives their loved ones a peace of mind.
