To most people, freelancing sounds like a dream. You’re basically your own boss, with the flexibility to work, create, and live on your own terms. More than practising a craft you enjoy, you get to exercise your independence. It’s all a bed of roses, right?

For those of us who’ve tried a hand at being self-employed, you’ll agree that it isn’t as pleasant as it seems. For starters, an inconsistent monthly income is a huge challenge. Living from job to job, without the certainty of when your next paycheck is coming in can be extremely nerve wrecking.

To make things worse, freelancers are running entire businesses without the support system of an organization. Not only are you required to produce work, you’re now expected to find your own customers as well.

While freedom and flexibility are major plus points in a freelancer’s career, working alone can take a toll on social interactions and keep self-employed entrepreneurs from getting the support they need. It doesn’t have to be this way though – combatting the loneliness of working alone can be as simple as stepping out to mingle with other self-employed entrepreneurs to fuel creativity and inspiration.

PayPalFreelancer x Tech in Asia brings you Self Made

PayPal and Tech in Asia have collaborated to bring you Self Made on December 8 in Singapore. An event targeted at the self-employed community of all trades, we’d like to extend a warm invitation to all freelancers to join us and engage with like-minded folks. Self Made will be a platform where tools, tips, and inspiration are driven by the community through crowdsourcing and self-organization.

Speakers and moderator

We’ve invited designer Jon Myers and tech entrepreneur Jon YongFook to join us in sharing their personal and inspiring journeys, including their learnings and tips for the freelance community. Grace Sai, CEO and co-founder of The Hub Singapore will be moderating the discussion.

Jon Myers is a UI designer based in the vibrant Ho Chi Minh City. With over 10 years of design experience under his belt – six spent freelancing – Jon’s specialities include user experience design, interface design, branding, entrepreneurship, and social technologies.

Jon YongFook is an entrepreneur based in Singapore, and also the founder of a few software companies including Cookpad, Japan’s biggest recipe portal, and Beatrix, a content creation tool for social media. Prior to his move to Singapore, YongFook spent 10 years in Japan.

Grace Sai is the CEO and co-founder of The Hub Singapore, Singapore’s largest co-working community of entrepreneurs, creatives and techies. She is regarded as the node of entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship in Asia, and speaks widely on that topic.
