In brief: Didi to beef up customer support after passenger murders

Via The Paper (translated from Chinese):

[Didi] is setting aside a new RMB 140 million [around US$20 million] fund dedicated to boosting its safety support team. It’s decided to stop outsourcing customer services and will expand its in-house customer support team to 8,000 employees by the end of this year.

The initiative was announced this morning by Cheng Wei, Didi’s founder and CEO. The Chinese ride-hailing firm has taken steps to beef up safety measures following the second murder of a rider in three months that prompted government scrutiny and public outrage.

Didi also said yesterday that it would be pausing all late-night services, including its Taxi, Express, and Premium offerings. The ride-hailer has already suspended Hitch, the feature involved in the two passenger murders, since August 27.

Correction (September 5: 4:30pm): An earlier version of the article stated that Didi suspended Hitch on September 4. The article has been updated to reflect that the service has been suspended since August 27.
