Hello reader,

I’ve never really understood the appeal of lizards as pets.

Do they wag their scaly tails with excitement when they see their owners like dogs? Can you snuggle up with them in bed like a particularly friendly cat? I can’t imagine lizards providing much affection.

Still, just because I don’t want one in my house, it doesn’t mean I can’t recognize that lizards have some amazing features. For instance, did you know that geckos can regrow their tails?

That makes them pretty damn resilient and also a fitting mascot for a crypto company that has survived the bear market. CoinGecko is still profitable amid the crypto winter, and it’s bootstrapped no less.

Today we look at:

Some of crypto’s biggest names have folded within the last year amid the crypto winter, but bootstrapped firm CoinGecko is still standing.

The Malaysia-based has stayed profitable through the winter, and sees brighter days ahead, its co-founder Bobby Ong told Tech in Asia.

  • Dips priced in: CoinGecko was founded in 2014, mere months after the collapse of crypto exchange Mt. Gox, which preceded another crypto winter. Ong says the company assumes a 50% to 70% revenue dip during such cycles, an approach that helps it ensure it has healthy cash reserves to weather the worst.
  • Unique selling point: The company allows users to track the price movements of cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens, and indices. Ong says that CoinGecko’s independence is what sets it apart from competitors, as he says being neutral means users can trust that its rankings of coins and exchanges are not influenced by business interests.
  • Bull ready to wake: Ong believes a bull run is on the horizon thanks to the continuing innovation in the industry, even amid the current bear market. Tech giants like Microsoft and large financial institutions like Blackrock investing in Web3 projects is a good sign, he adds.
