Crypto stocks fall as investors shift to risk-off mode

Cryptocurrency-related stocks fell on August 19, 2025, as investors moved away from tech and risk assets.

Coinbase and eToro each dropped over 5%, while Robinhood and Bullish were down more than 6%.

Galaxy Digital, a crypto financial services firm, saw its shares drop by 11%.

Cryptocurrency treasury firms also faced losses, with Strategy down 7%, SharpLink Gaming down 8%, Bitmine Immersion down 12%, and DeFi Development down 15%.

Circle, a stablecoin issuer, lost 5%.

Bitcoin’s price dropped nearly 3% to just above US$113,000, and ether fell by more than 4% to around US$4,100, according to Coin Metrics.

The sell-off came as the Nasdaq Composite index fell over 1% amid drops in major tech companies.

Investors are awaiting signals from the Federal Reserve’s annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole this week on future interest rate policy.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Current crypto volatility is minimal compared to historical crash patterns

Bitcoin’s 3% pullback to $113,000 represents standard market fluctuation when viewed against the cryptocurrency’s volatile history.

Bitcoin has experienced thirteen major crashes since 2012, with losses ranging from 30% to 87%, including an 81% decline from nearly $20,000 to below $3,500 during the 2018 bear market 12.

The cryptocurrency has survived multiple devastating downturns, including a 92% drop in 2011 and an 84% decline from 2013 to 2015, demonstrating a pattern of recovery despite severe short-term losses 1.

Tuesday’s modest decline across crypto stocks—with Coinbase and eToro falling 5% and Galaxy Digital dropping 11%—is minor compared to the 80% market-wide crash that occurred in 2018, when total crypto market capitalization fell from $800 billion to approximately $200 billion 3.

This historical context suggests that current market participants may be reacting disproportionately to routine profit-taking behavior rather than facing a fundamental crisis.
