How Marketers Are Using Social Media in 2010

Social-MediaFlowtown has released another infographic based on research by Michael Steltzer, founder of SocialMediaExaminer that gives us a good overview of how businesses are latching onto the marketing opportunity presented by the growth of social media.

Adoption of social media in marketing is still in its nascent stage, but we can see that many businesses have come on board the bandwagon and are perhaps more conservative with their approach: spending 1-10 hours on social media in a week (that boils down to a maximum of 2 hours on social media per working day – I’m not sure how much that speaks about them reacting to social media in real time). Efforts seem to be concentrated on more popular social networks, which makes perfect sense, however, a strong interest lies in mobile and social bookmarking sites.

Key trends:

  • Marketers are adopting the use of social media at a rapid pace. However, a large majority are relatively new to this – 43% have been using social media for marketing for just a few months.
  • Majority invest 1-10 hours in social media a week
  • A whopping 86% prefer to have their social media efforts done in-house
  • 81% plan to increase their social media presence, majority planning to do this via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.
  • The top 3 upsides of social media marketing:

  2. Increased traffic / subscribers / opt-in list (63%)
  3. Resulted in new business partnerships (56%)
