Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Meta will shed 10,000 more jobs in addition to 11,000 roles it eliminated in November 2022.
In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg stressed that the move is part of his push for 2023 to be the “Year of Efficiency.”
“We expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven’t yet hired,” he said. “This will be tough and there’s no way around that.”
With this latest layoffs, which comes just months after the first round, Meta aims to be “as lean as possible.” Zuckerberg also noted the importance of returning to “a more optimal ratio of engineers to other roles.”
In February, Meta reported a milestone of 2 billion users for Facebook, but its revenue continued declining. Its metaverse bet cost the company about US$13.7 billion in 2022.
Facebook’s parent company was also slower to react to the AI boom compared to its peers, only announcing recently that it wants to “turbocharge” its work on generative AI.
