“China has issued its most detailed warning yet against the excessive-work culture that pervades the country’s largest corporations, as a backlash grows against the punishing demands of the private sector,” Bloomberg reported.
Details:
- In an essay published by the country’s Supreme People’s Court and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, said the practice of making employees work 9 am to 9 pm, six days a week – also known as the “996” work culture – violates labor laws.
- One of the sample cases outlined in the essay involved an unidentified tech firm that had asked its recruits to sign agreements giving up overtime pay, which the court deemed to be illegal.

- The issue, which has already sparked widespread hue and cry on Chinese social media, was made worse when a Pinduoduo worker died for what seemed to be work-related reasons earlier this year.
