Everyone wants a piece of the China boom these days. But how? For e-commerce, Taobao is a good choice for many foreign brands out there. There’s also Export Now, a company that helps U.S brands to get onto Taobao in a breeze. Other services include Dextrys, an outsourcing solution giant based out of Suzhou which helps tech firms to enter and localize in China. And most recently, I learned that Singapore-based JO2 is another company that wishes to bridge China with the rest of the world.
JO2 aims to bring quality mobile apps to China. Backed by the team’s experience at StarAndroid, an Android marketplace in China, Terrence Ngu, the managing director at JO2 and StarAndroid, believes that they have the know-how to make apps successful in China.
One thing is for sure, StarAndroid is using Sina Weibo pretty effectively. Terrence explains that he has a certain technique to attract the right target audience on Weibo (he didn’t elaborate on it much, unfortunately) . He also claims that most of StarAndroid’s followers on Weibo are Android users. This explains why the engagement level is so high on its Weibo page.
For JO2, Terrence and his team is on the lookout to help quality mobile apps to enter China and to increase their exposure and revenue. The team is highly experienced in Chinese SEO, social media engagement, ad placement, public relations, and finding distribution partners. One of JO2 clients is Alibaba’s cloud-computing division Aliyun, whose app store is powered by StarAndriod. Other clients include UC web browser, and specialist e-commerce sites Letao and Vancl.
Terrence himself is a Malaysian and was one of the key members who helped Creative Technologies (the company that sued Apple and successfully settled their legal dispute over music player patents for $100 million) to set up its base in China.
As Creative fades away from the consumers’ minds, Terrence insists that Creative is a great company which is laser-focused on R&D. He pointed out that moving to China is probably one of his best career decisions as he built a wide network in the Chinese tech space. StarAndroid was created after he left Creative. The Android marketplace was a success which then led Terrence to form JO2 with his team as he see opportunities to bring mobile apps into the China market.
