Chinese Soliders Play “Counter Strike” For Training

Soldiers nowadays seem to be enjoying much better treatment. First we have soldiers getting iPad 2s, and now in China soldiers are playing a specially-made Counter Strike-like game for use in training. It’s entitled Glorious Mission, according to a report from the China Daily.

The game is a first-person shooter with options to play it either alone or with 32 other comrade gamers. There are three modules to choose from: basic training, single missions, and team combat.

The graphics are intended to look as realistic as possible, and to match all the actual weapons which the soldiers will be using in their physical training. It can also simulate weather conditions and battle situations, depending on the soldiers’ training schedule. Instructors will be able to put the soldiers into the harshest environments imaginable if they choose.

Professor Gong Fangbin of The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said that the game helps to improve the soldiers’ tactical and combat zone awareness.

Video games are common training tools in the military. In Singapore, several friends of mine who are training as fighter pilots go through rigorous flight simulator sessions before flying any real combat planes. It would be cool if Singapore could run such training video games on the 8,000 iPad 2s which will be given to the servicemen. It will be fun.
