Chinese net cafe gamers played 30 billion minutes of MOBA games in July
Just how into games like League of Legends, Meng San Guo, and Dota 2 is China? Enough that Chinese gamers at internet cafes spent a collective 30-plus billion minutes (that’s about 500 million hours) playing them this July.
According to a report published on QQ Games using data from Shunwang, MOBA games like League were played for by far the longest in China’s internet cafes. Here’s a translated chart that breaks down the results by genre; as you can see MOBA games actually saw a jump in play in July when compared to June (perhaps due in part to the TI4 hype).

League of Legends, unsurprisingly, takes home the ultimate crown. According to the report, it was played about five times as much as Meng San Guo, and around ten times as much as Dota 2. (The report does not list a specific number of minutes played for particular games, but it does index them based on playtimes.) All three of those games are significantly more popular than any of the other MOBA competitors.
In the FPS genre, Crossfire holds the lead by a wide margin, with Assault Fire and Counter-Strike in second and third, respectively. Dungeon & Fighter is king of the fighter genre, Blade & Soul rules the roost when it comes to 3D action MMOs, and Fantasy Journey to the West 2 is top of the 2D turn-based MMO heap.
(See: Why is Crossfire so popular in Asia?)
While the report is definitely interesting, it’s worth pointing out that this is just the data collected by one company, and it only reflects the habits of gamers in some of China’s internet cafes. If all internet cafes (including the illegal ones) and gamers who played on their own PCs could be factored in, the results might look different. Still, it’s pretty clear that China really, really loves MOBA games.
