Chinese authority proposes to control role of algorithms used by tech giants
“Chinese regulators are seeking to implement far-reaching rules about the algorithms technology companies use to recommend videos and other content, claiming authority over internet services that governments like the US have struggled to regulate,” Bloomberg reported.
Details:
- In a 30-point draft proposal, the Cyberspace Administration of China sought the ban of practices that “encourage addiction or high consumption.”
- The new rules, which would affect tech giants like Tencent and ByteDance, would also bar activities that might pose a threat to national security and social and economic order in the country.
Dive deeper:
- The plans come after the Central Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the State Administration of Radio and Television, among other bodies, urged for “culture and art reviews” in the country to limit the role algorithms play in the distribution of content.
- China has also recently put gaming companies under its microscope, which forced tech titan Tencent to make it more difficult for minors to access its popular video game title, Honor of Kings.
