China’s Zhipu AI unveils $560m Hong Kong share sale

Zhipu AI, a Chinese AI startup also known overseas as Z.ai, has launched a share sale in Hong Kong to raise HK$4.4 billion (US$560 million).

The company set its offer price at HK$116.20 (US$14.90) for over 37 million shares, with 10% of shares allocated to retail investors, and aims to debut on the Hong Kong stock exchange on January 8.

If completed, Zhipu AI would become the first large language model (LLM) developer to list in Hong Kong, ahead of rival Minimax Group.

Zhipu AI’s post-listing market valuation is estimated to reach HK$51.2 billion (US$6.6 billion).

The company has received backing from major Chinese tech firms, including Meituan, Alibaba, Tencent, and Xiaomi.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Zhipu’s Hong Kong IPO implies ~$7 billion valuation; some financial details not verified

  • Zhipu AI targets HK$51.2 billion ($7 billion) after listing. The company filed a Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) prospectus, yet our materials lacked revenue, customer, or profit data, so we could not verify them.
  • GLM-4.7, part of the GLM-4 series of large language models, scored 84.9% on LiveCodeBench and 73.8% on SWE-bench Verified. The scores match or beat Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.5. GLM API access starts at $3 per month, while rivals ask about $200.
  • Backers include Meituan, Alibaba, Tencent, and Xiaomi. These ties could open enterprise channels, or they might be hedge bets by Chinese tech giants. Customer counts and revenue per user remain undisclosed.

Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) vendors can help Zhipu users cut deployment costs

  • AI inference toolmakers can target open-weights GLM-4.5 and GLM-4.7. Local runs often need datacenter GPUs or multi-GPU rigs, which creates demand for software that cuts hardware use while keeping GLM-4.7’s 84.9% LiveCodeBench score.
  • Developer platforms can ship add-ons for GLM-4.7’s Preserved Thinking feature, which keeps a reasoning state across turns. Multi-step coding will need context control and session services that Zhipu may not provide.
  • Enterprise vendors for China should test GLM API integration given the $3 per month access. This pricing may steer budgets toward a mix of tools over single premium plans, which opens room for complementary SaaS.
