China's Pony AI, Toyota start self-driving vehicle production

Chinese robotaxi firm Pony AI has begun commercial production of a driverless vehicle in partnership with Toyota, one of its backers.

The first of 1,000 all-electric Toyota bZ4X crossovers was assembled at a joint venture between Toyota and Guangzhou Automobile Group.

The ramp-up aims to support Pony AI’s plan to expand its robotaxi fleet to over 3,000 vehicles by year-end.

The bZ4X is one of three models deployed in Chinese cities using Pony AI’s latest self-driving software.

Pony AI’s stock increased by 4.4% in New York trading.

The company is among several Chinese firms, including Baidu and WeRide, expanding robotaxi services domestically and internationally.

While Pony AI’s technology can navigate autonomously, human drivers are still present to assist, with a current ratio of one person per 30 vehicles.
