China’s Moonshot AI explores HK IPO, eyes $1b funding
Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based startup, is in early discussions about a Hong Kong IPO amid growing investor interest in AI stocks, people familiar with the matter said.
The company has spoken with China International Capital Corp and Goldman Sachs about a possible offering, though the timing is still uncertain.
The talks come as China tightens scrutiny of Hong Kong listings, even as Beijing signals support for domestic AI and robotics companies.
Moonshot is also discussing a funding round of up to US$1 billion after raising more than US$700 million earlier this year. Bloomberg reported the expanded round could value it at about US$18 billion.
Moonshot was founded by former Tsinghua University professor Yang Zhilin and counts Alibaba, Tencent, and 5Y Capital among its backers.

- In January 2026, a funding round priced the company at US$4.8 billion, after a US$4.3 billion valuation in December 2025 2.
- Bloomberg News reported that Moonshot was close to extending a funding round first pegged at US$500 million, later raised to US$700 million, and that the extension could push the valuation to about US$10 billion or higher 3.
- Across these figures, the implied jump runs past four times in roughly one quarter, driven by strong investor interest tied to the IPO talks 1.
Public market rallies boost pre-IPO demand amid heavy AI spending
- Market caps for Hong Kong-listed Z.ai and MiniMax climbed to about four to five times their IPO valuations by mid-February 2026, shaping the tone of the IPO talks 3.

- StepFun chairman Yin Qi put the annual cost of staying competitive in China’s base-model AI research and development (R&D) at RMB 3–5 billion (US$420–700 million) 3.
