8 Must-Read Tech Stories in China This Week

China-this-week

This past week in China saw action all over the spectrum – rumors, earnings, new joint-ventures, new hardware, and new milestones.

1. 16% of Apple’s Sales From China, Says CEO Cook

In Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) first post-Jobs earnings call, new CEO Tim Cook revealed some interesting figures regarding the company’s performance in China. Most notable was the fact that 16 percent of its quarterly revenue came from Greater China, Apple’s second largest market.

2. Co-founder of Xiaomi Demos New Smartphone, Just Released [VIDEO]

We met up with Bin Lin, co-founder of Xiaomi, to find out more about the start-up’s product, and to get a hands-on with a customer-spec version of its M1 smartphone, which is China’s hottest hardware release this month.

3. Tudou and LeTV Partner Up, Launch Joint Venture

Video streaming websites Tudou (NASDAQ:TUDO) and LeTV announced that the companies have partnered to found a new joint-venture company. It’ll be primarily working on the acquisition and sale of domestic film and television rights and, presumably, feeding content to both Tudou and LeTV.

4. Lenovo’s eeDoo iSec Games Console, at 3,000 RMB, Slated for December Launch

Lenovo (HKG:0992) has finally put a price, a release date, and a set of snazzy colours on its upcoming eeDoo iSec games console. But the troubled product is still not legal in China – an issue for all such consoles. Despite that, Microsoft brought an XBox and Kinect demo booth to a trade fair in southern China.

5. A Chinese Government-Made iPhone App Provides Free Condoms in Beijing

In a sexual health initiative, Beijing authorities are giving away free condoms to its citizens via a custom-made iPhone app called FreeCondom.

6. Could China’s Shanda Be the First of Many to Go From NASDAQ to SHA?

News that Shanda Interactive (NASDAQ:SNDA) was seeking to go private and delist raises the spectre of other Chinese web/tech companies also abandoning the New York tickers in favour of, say, SHA, SHE, or HKG – China’s own stock exchanges in, respectively, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong.
